Question 1: Select the correct word from the following list and fill in the blanks.

Question 3: Give two examples of each: Kharif Crops and Rabi Crops

Kharif Crops: Maize & Paddy

Rabi crops: Wheat, barley, and mustard

Question 4: Write para on each of the following:

(a) Preparation of Soil: Soil is prepared before seeds are sown. Loosening of the soil is essential so that the soil can easily absorb the water and manure. A tractor or bulls may be used for loosening of the soil. The tractor is run on the soil so that it becomes loosened. This also helps the nutrients to get completely mixed with the soil.

(b) Sowing: In sowing, the seeds are placed at the right position and soil is put on them. This helps the seeds to grow properly.
 (c) Weeding: The unnecessary that starts growing along with the crops are known as weeds. Weeds take up nutrients from the main crops. So, these weeds should be removed timely. These weeds can be removed manually or by using machines. Different chemicals are also used by farmers to remove these weeds.
(d) Threshing: In the process of threshing we remove the grains (edible part) from the chaff. It may be done manually by striking it on the ground or by using a flail.

Question 5: Explain how fertilizers are different from manures.
Ans.
(i) Manures provide humus to the soil while fertilizers does not provide humus to the soil
(ii) Fertilizers may contain only few nutrients but manure is rich in nutrients
(iii) Fertilizers are made by artificial process whereas manure are prepared from the wastes.

 

Question 6: What is irrigation? Describe two methods of irrigation which conserve water
Ans 6: Crops need water for their growth. Providing water to the crops is known as irrigation. There are different method of irrigation. Let us check them:

 

Sprinklers: Sprinklers are used to irrigate crops and lawns. Water is supplied in a controlled manner. The sprinklers move in a circular pattern to spread water in all parts of the crop
Drip irrigation system: In this method, water is released in a slow manner and in way that water reachers the roots directly so that extra water does not get evaporated. This is considred an efficient method of irrigation.

 

Question 7: What would happen if wheat is sown in the Kharif season? Discuss
Ans 7: Wheat needs a warm climate and if it is grown in the kharif season then the seeds may get destroyed due to the presence of excess water in the field. So, it is better to grow wheat in the rabi season only.

Question 8: Explain how soil gets affected by the continuous plantation of crops in a field.

Ans 8: Continuous plantation of crops may lead the soil to lose its fertility. Soil needs a time gap after growing a particular crop. If we keep planting the crops without any break the field may become infertile.

 

Question 9: What are weeds and how can we control them?
Ans 9: Weeds are unwanted plants that grow with the crops. If allowed to grow they keep on taking nutrients from the soil and causes a problem for the main crops. So, these weeds are removed by hands or by using a mechanical process. Chemicals may also be used to destroy the weeds present in the crops.
