Conservation of Plants and Animals NCERT Solutions
Conservation of Plants and animals is a chapter in class 8 science book. This chapter discusses the importance of plants and animals. The wildlife and how deforestation affects the environment. In this article, I have shared Class 8 NCERT Solutions for the chapter Conservation of plants and animals.

Conservation of Plants and Animals NCERT Solutions

Question 1:  Fill in the blanks:
(a) A place where animals are protected in their natural habitat is called _Wildlife sanctuaries__
(b) Species found only in a particular area is known as _Endemic species_
 (c) Migratory birds fly to faraway places because of changes in __the climate__

Question 2: Differentiate between the following:
(a) Wildlife sanctuary and biosphere reserve
(b) Zoo and wildlife sanctuary
(c) Endangered and extinct species
 (d) Flora and fauna.
Ans 2:

(a) Wildlife Sanctuaries: Wildlife sanctuaries are those where the animals are protected in their natural habitats. Here the animals are safe from hunting and other illegal activities. These are made to preserve the wildlife
A biosphere reserve is a place where the natural habitats, animals and the microorganisms are conserved. It may consist of different wildlife sanctuaries and parks where species of animals, birds, and plants exist together.
(b) Zoo: A zoo is a place where animals are kept. The environment is not completely natural but it created by man, and efforts are to make it similar to the natural habitats. A lot of human visitors come here to different species of birds and animals.
A Wildlife sanctuary is the natural habitat of the animals. They are preserved and no illegal activity like hunting and poaching is allowed.
(c) Endangered species: These are the species that are on the verge of extinction. If we make efforts, we can prevent them from extinction

Extinct species are those which have already become extinct due to some factors. Some of the extinct species are:-

  • Dodo
  • Stellers Sea Cow
  • Tasmanian Tiger
  • Great Auk
(d) Flora: Flora means the plant life which is present in a region for a particular period of time. IT consists of all the plant species of that region
The fauna consists of the animal species present in the region for a particular period of time.

Question 3: Discuss the effects of deforestation on the following:
(a) Wild animals
Forests are home to different species of wild animals. They are their homes. When forests are removed the wild animals are affected badly. They lose their habitat and are forced to wander to new places.
(b) Environment:
Environment is badly affected due to deforestation. The forests cover maintains the ecological balance. This balanced gets disturbed when forests are removed. It can also lead to an imbalance in the amount of CO2 as plants intake CO2. This can lead to an increase in temperature.
(c) Villages (Rural areas)
Villages which are close to forests are dependent on forests for various needs. When the forests are cleared the wild animals of the forest like tiger, snake etc. they may be forced to run towards the rural areas. They may kill innocent villagers.
(d) Cities (Urban areas)
Urban areas experience side effects in an indirect manner. They experience an increase in temperature and poor air quality.
(e) Earth: Mother earth is made from the flora and fauna. If the forests are cleared various changes occur on earth.
(f) The next generation: The next generation may face increased pollution, global warming etc. They may not be able to see nature’s beauty if we keep destroying nature.
Question 4:  What will happen if:

            (a) we go on cutting trees.
            (b) the habitat of an animal is disturbed.
            (c) the top layer of soil is exposed.

Ans 4:
(a) If we go on cutting trees for our own interests then the natural habitat will be disturbed. Trees provide shelter, the wildlife will be disturbed. Trees maintain a balance of the gases in the atmosphere. CO2 will increase causing an increase in global warming. The wild animals will move towards the cities and villages.
(b) If the habitat of animal is disturbed then animals will start  moving towards cities and villages. Wild animals may kill people if they feel danger. It will disturb the balance of life. Human life will also be affected.
(c) If the top layer of the soil is exposed, it may become infertile. The soil will lose its quality and the land will become barren.
Q.5.  Answer in brief:
            (a) Why should we conserve biodiversity?
            (b) Protected forests are also not completely safe for wild animals. Why?
            (c) Some tribals depend on the jungle. How?
            (d) What are the causes and consequences of deforestation?
            (e) What is Red Data Book?
            (f) What do you understand by the term migration?
Ans 5:

(a) We should conserve biodiversity because it maintains a balance on the earth. If any component is disturbed other components will be affected directly or indirectly. They are made to protect them from extinction.
(b) Protected wildlife are not safe for wild animals because illegal activities like hunting and poaching may take place in these areas too.
(c) Tribal people live in forests and they are dependent on the jungle for their needs.
(d) Causes of deforestation are caused due to the greed of humans. They want to make more industries on forest lands
The consequences of deforestation are extinction of wildlife, plant life is affected, increase in pollution and global warming, villages dependent on forests are affected.
(e) Red Data book is the book in which record of all endangered species of plants and animals is maintained.
(f) Migration means movement from the present place of living to other places. This happens with animals and birds. Birds fly from one location to another when the season changes. They do this to enjoy a better climate.

Question 6: In order to meet the ever-increasing demand in factories and for shelter, trees are being continually cut. Is it justified to cut trees for such purposes? Discuss and prepare a brief report.
Ans. This is not justifiable as greed will always lead to destruction. Trees are very important for the environment. They maintain a balance in the environment, keeps a check on air pollution, more trees means less global warming and pollution. Animals and birds are dependent on them. If trees are cut they will lose their habitats. We should protect trees and should ban illegal cutting of trees. Govt. should make more strict laws and regulations.

Question 7:  How can you contribute to the maintenance of the green wealth of your locality? Make a list of actions to be taken by you.
Ans 7:
1) We can plant more and more trees to make the place more beautiful
2) Organizing meetings to discuss the plantation of more plants.
3) Making of nurseries near the localities
4) Encouraging children to grow more plants in their surroundings. Children should be taught the importance of trees from a very young age.

Question 8  Explain how deforestation leads to reduced rainfall.
Ans 8. Plants show transpiration, the loss of water from aerial parts of the plants.  The water evaporates and helps in the formation of cloud. The cloud then leads to precipitation. When clouds wil not be formed, rainfall will be impacted. This will lead to less rainfall in the region. So, forests are indirectly important for the rainfall. We should avoid deforestation.
Question 9.  Why should the paper be saved? Prepare a list of ways by which you can save paper.
Ans. Paper is made from trees. If we do not reuse paper then more trees will be cut for production of new papers. So, we should save paper and reuse it wherever possible.
           How to Save Paper.
            (i) We should focus on reusing the paper.
(ii) Paper bundles should be collected for recycling
(iii) We should try to bring waste paper in use.
